Make RealUp Yours!

Slogans, like company names, can be a daunting task to undertake. They need to be succinct, easy to remember and meaningful. They need to give an impression of the company’s core values. A slogan should appear on every letterhead and press release, so it needs to be something that’s not going to get old.

Having a memorable slogan is only useful if it tells you something about the company. Communicating our core values is very important to us, so we knew it needed to express our results-centered focus. We are passionate about our free search and free comparables data, so that has to come across in the slogan as well.

Memorable and meaningful are all well and good, but if the slogan doesn’t point back to the company, then it is all for nothing. We wanted a slogan that would evoke the name RealUp, too.

Another important polishing factor for a slogan is rhythm and rhyme. Slogans, like headlines, should sing. This may sound strange, but if you can sing it and have it sound like a complete musical phrase, it is balanced. Singing will also tell you where the natural breaks are in your slogan, which helps if you want to put a line break in your slogan to fit a particular design.

We are fortunate in the fact that we have a clear idea of how we want to run RealUp and what we want to accomplish. It only took us about five minutes to come up with a slogan that we felt really represented our company. Here it is: Real Value. Real Results.

This slogan incorporates all the elements of an effective tagline. Everybody has their own opinion on what makes a good slogan. If you need a laugh, go check out the slogan generator to get your creative juices flowing.

RealUp.com, LLC

Friday, January 23, 2009
RealUp.com, LLC has officially been formed as of January 23, 2009. Articles of Organization were filed with the North Carolina Secretary of State on January 14, 2009 and have now been officially approved.

LLC stands for Limited Liability Company, and it is a flexible designation that has aspects of both a corporation and a partnership. The first LLC in the United States was created in Wyoming in 1977 as special interest legislation for an oil company. The LLC did not gain popularity until the mid 1990's, and the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) did not create the Uniform Limited Liability Company Act (ULLCA) until 1996 and was last revised in 2006.

Despite the fact that it is relatively new, there are many benefits to being an LLC. First, an LLC can choose how it would like to be taxed. An LLC can elect to be taxed as a sole proprietor, partnership, S corporation or C corporation. Another benefit is that LLC members are treated much like shareholders in a corporation in that they are not liable to repay the LLCs obligations beyond his or her capitol contribution, hence limited liability. LLCs are now very popular with many small businesses.

A commercial real estate brokerage may want to register as an LLC or as a PLLC (Professional Limited Liability Company). PLLCs are designed for services for which the state requires a license. For example, Triangle CREW, PLLC, was formed in 1996 as the local chapter of CREW (Commercial Real Estate Women) for Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill.

You should always consult with independent financial, legal, and tax advisors to determine the form of business entity or legal structure that is best for your organization.

Master of our Domain Name

Friday, July 25, 2008
Today we have taken full control of the official company domain name RealUp.com!

We recently purchased our domain name from BuyDomains which is a leading domainer or domain name reseller. BuyDomains has a portfolio of over 1,500,000 domain names available for auction or for sale. We were able to negotiate the price down to only $1,000 – this could prove to be our best investment ever!

We have now transferred the domain to our possession and we are hosting the domain at Go Daddy. Despite the awful Super Bowl ads, Go Daddy is the largest ICANN accredited registrar in the world and offers the best service and features at the lowest price.

RealUp.com is the flagship domain name and where all of our commercial real estate listings will be available. In addition to RealUp.com, we also own several domain variations including RealUp.net, RealUp.name, RealUp.org, RealUp.biz and even RealUpBlog.com.

Hello, my name is...

Monday, July 14, 2008
What's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but would you still buy it for your sweetie if it was called a pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis? Probably not.

Coming up with a name is always difficult, but naming a commercial real estate listing site has its own unique set of challenges. We needed a real estate related name that was short, phonetic, and had an available dot-com domain.

First of all, "commercial real estate listing website" is a mouthful. We needed something catchy, not too long and not too expensive as a domain name.

One method we used to try to fit these parameters was to think of a "silly name". These are names like Google, Yahoo and Zillow which are basically nonsense words, but they are also a clean slate from which to build a company image. "Seufiex," "Wuuix" and "Realisezze" were a few that we came up with. They are fun names, but we didn’t feel a real connection to these words and guessed that our audience wouldn’t either.

Another method is to use real words or combinations of words to quickly convey our place in the commercial real estate industry. We started by piecing together words like real, estate, property, commercial, listing, lead, company, now, search, way, record, register and many more. Once we got going, we came up with an amazing number of combinations.

These names felt more natural to us, so the next step was picking the best name. We are an internet-based company, so we wanted a tech feel. Our audience is made up of the movers and shakers in the commercial real estate world, so we wanted it to be streamlined and dignified.

We then entered all our ideas into a spreadsheet and sorted them by character length, which keywords were evoked, how many syllables it had, whether or not it was phonetically spelled, where we could buy the domain name and how much the domain name cost.

Another important factor we needed to consider is how the name would look with a logo. We worked with several names and iterations of the logo to find the right name with the right look.

The winner is: RealUp!
